BRISTOL, May 5: Sarawak is making history with plans to develop and launch its own Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite.
Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, stated that this strategic move, led by SMD Semiconductor through a partnership exploration with United Kingdom (UK) partners, aims to strengthen data capabilities, particularly in addressing the challenges of climate change and enhancing telecommunications infrastructure.
“We are exploring efforts to develop and potentially launch our own Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite alongside international partners such as the UK.
“These technologies underpin essential data capabilities that drive connectivity and real-world applications, particularly in extending high-speed, low-latency access to remote and underserved areas,” he said during a strategic semiconductor engagement session with the University of Bristol here.
He explained that owning the satellite would enable Sarawak to make more accurate ‘hyper-local’ data-driven decisions for forest management, maritime monitoring, and early flood warning systems.
To support this ecosystem, the Premier noted that the government has also established the Sarawak Aerospace Advisory Council and the Sarawak Space Agency to ensure smooth policy coordination and long-term planning for the sector.
“Climate data is no longer just a support tool; it is a strategic asset for us,” he added. – TVS
