Weaving a Sarawakian technological future

smd-about-hero-banner@1.5x

We take inspiration from the pua kumbu weavers of our land, who are our revered living legacies of Sarawak’s identity. They weave the dreams of the spirit realm into interpretive textiles in the physical world, honing a unique combination of precision and creativity that sets them apart. It is with this inspiration that Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD) Semiconductor was incorporated in 2022.

Here, our loom is not made of wood, but of cutting-edge technology. And in each chip, we weave the fabric of Sarawak's technological future. It is our vision to create a Silicon Longhouse in Samajaya High Tech Zone - a place where global semiconductor giants and local talents come together to innovate, collaborate, and build the future.

Our roadmap to a sustainable future

Together with our partners, we are dedicated to building a sustainable and equitable future through microelectronic design. Sustainability is not just a commitment but a guiding principle that shapes our strategies, innovations, and relationships. By integrating these principles in our business, we strive to create a positive impact on the environment, society, and the economy today and for future generations. Hence in SMD, we are making sustainable practices as part of our DNA.

C-Suite Executives

Shariman Jamil

Shariman Jamil, a technopreneur and innovator, is crafting Sarawak's Silicon Future. He began his career in Silicon Valley in 2004 as an analogue IC design engineer with Spansion. He played a pivotal role in the evolution of flash memory chips for mobile devices, experiencing firsthand the seismic shifts semiconductors brought to global communication. He continued his odyssey in Tokyo, Penang, and Graz, Austria, the tech epicenters that endowed him with invaluable insights into energy-efficient electronics.

Shariman returned to Sarawak in 2020 and worked with the Ministry of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development, where he meticulously laid the groundwork for Sarawak's ascent in the semiconductor arena, culminating in the founding of SMD Semiconductor in 2022. His vision goes beyond chip design; he aspires to create a holistic semiconductor ecosystem—a "Sarawak Silicon Longhouse" that blends Sarawak's communal ethos with cutting-edge technology, fostering an environment where innovation flourishes and local talent can shine on the global stage.

Chia Chieu Yin

Chia Chieu Yin (CY) holds more than 20 years of experience in Analog and Mixed Signal IC design. Along the way he has picked up many specialties and also has 3 patents granted under his name. In his spare time, he gives back to the industry by providing training sessions and mentoring juniors, as appointed adjunct lecturer, Industrial Advisor and final-year project evaluator with local universities.

CY began his career with Spansion Inc in Silicon Valley in 2001, designing NOR Flash memory products. During his 8 years there, he worked on 6 NOR Flash memory products from specifications to production. He focused on X / Y decoding, High Voltage Path, Core Array, SRAMs, Oscillators, High-Voltage level shifters, bandgaps, charge pumps and voltage regulators. He also gained experience in silicon micro-probing, debugging, and validation. And he worked with test and production engineers to bring these ICs to production.

In 2009, CY joined MIMOS Berhad, working on different IP blocks from delta-sigma ADCs, SAR ADCs, LDOs, PMSM motor controllers and temperature sensors. He and his team delivered on multiple IC design services projects with customers from Europe and the United States. He taped out designs from leading foundries such as TSMC, UMC, XFAB, GlobalFoundries and Silterra. During his 12 years there, he led and managed a team of 20 engineers working on projects as diverse as Solar Microinverter, Solar Axis Tracker, AC Induction motor controller and Edge AI ICs.

CY also managed a RM84 million project under the 11th Malaysia Plan, from 2016 - 2020, to help develop the Malaysian IC design infrastructure and address the shortage of IC design talent in Malaysia.
