SIBU: The Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS) has taken over the Semiconductor Mastery Programme from SMD Semiconductor to strengthen Sarawak’s workforce for the global semiconductor industry.
The handover was formalised during the Strategic Partnership Exchange for Semiconductor Mastery Programme and Talent Development at the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) yesterday (July 26), held in conjunction with the SMD IC Design Make-A-Thon 2025.
Present to witness the handover was Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee.
SMD chief executive officer (CEO) Shariman Jamil said the handover is not just a transition of responsibilities but a strategic move forward in growing Sarawak’s talent ecosystem.
The six‑month programme, initially developed by SMD, focuses on Analog IC Design and will expand to include Digital IC Design and IC Test Solutions. These areas have been identified as priorities in the state’s semiconductor development agenda.
“With CENTEXS taking the lead in delivery, and SMD continuing as the exclusive training provider, we are ensuring that the programme retains its technical integrity while expanding its reach,” Shariman added.
Meanwhile, CENTEXS CEO Datuk Syeed Mohd Hussien Wan Abd Rahman hailed the handover as a proud moment and expressed appreciation for the trust placed in CENTEXS, stating that the organisation is fully committed to equipping Sarawak’s youth with in-demand skills for the future.
“We are honoured to carry the torch forward in developing the next generation of semiconductor professionals for Sarawak. The move underscores the synergy between CENTEXS and SMD, and our shared mission to empower talent, support Sarawak’s
electrical and electronics (E&E) sector, and drive innovation for the region,” he added.
