Weaving a Sarawakian technological future

smd-about-hero-banner@1.5x

We take inspiration from the pua kumbu weavers of our land, who are our revered living legacies of Sarawak’s identity. They weave the dreams of the spirit realm into interpretive textiles in the physical world, honing a unique combination of precision and creativity that sets them apart. It is with this inspiration that Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD) Semiconductor was incorporated in 2022.

Here, our loom is not made of wood, but of cutting-edge technology. And in each chip, we weave the fabric of Sarawak's technological future. It is our vision to create a Silicon Longhouse in Samajaya High Tech Zone - a place where global semiconductor giants and local talents come together to innovate, collaborate, and build the future.

Our roadmap to a sustainable future

Together with our partners, we are dedicated to building a sustainable and equitable future through microelectronic design. Sustainability is not just a commitment but a guiding principle that shapes our strategies, innovations, and relationships. By integrating these principles in our business, we strive to create a positive impact on the environment, society, and the economy today and for future generations. Hence in SMD, we are making sustainable practices as part of our DNA.

Executive Leadership Team

Shariman Jamil

Shariman Jamil began his journey as an Analog IC design engineer. Unbeknownst to him at the time, this decision would become the cornerstone of his illustrious career. Determination and dedication, fuelled by a desire to learn and grow, then took him from developing flash memory ICs for mobile phones at the famed Silicon Valley to developing highly-integrated power management technologies for energy-saving electronics in Tokyo and Penang.

In 2020, Shariman took on the role of Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak as an interim CEO for the new Sarawak Science Centre, where he led the development of a new science centre master plan with the Singapore Science Centre. Concurrently, he was also acting as Head of Talent Development, spearheading skills training and industrial partnership under the Sarawak Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.

Around that time, Shariman began initiating semiconductors and IC design partnerships between the government and key industry players, to strengthen the local semiconductor ecosystem, and position Sarawak as an attractive investment destination for the semiconductor industry.

Then in 2022, Shariman led the formation of the new Sarawak Microelectronics Design or SMD Semiconductor Sdn Bhd and was subsequently appointed as the CEO of the company. In his current role, Shariman oversees catalysing the growth of high-value-added semiconductor activities in Sarawak, in line with the aspirations of the State government, its strategic partners and clients, and towards establishing the company as a leading R&D Centre for global semiconductor companies.
